Materials ยท Why they decide the result
Quality of Materials
The difference between a finish that lasts one year and one that lasts eight is rarely the brush work. It is the preparation and the products underneath.
Why this matters more than people expect
Two painters can do visually identical work on the same wall, and three years later one looks fresh and the other is chalking, peeling at the trim and marked wherever it has been wiped. The difference is almost never the brush technique. It is the primer, the product and whether the surface was prepared to take them.
Different rooms need different products
- Kitchens and bathrooms need moisture-resistant, washable finishes that cope with steam and cleaning
- Hallways and stairwells take constant contact and need a harder, scrubbable finish
- Bedrooms and living rooms can take a softer matt, which hides wall imperfections better
- Trim and doors need a product that cures hard, or it marks every time something brushes past
- Exteriors need flexibility to move through Ohio freeze-thaw without cracking
- Cabinets need a cabinet-specific finish; wall paint on cabinetry peels within a year
Primer is not an optional extra
Primer is what the finish coat actually holds on to. On bare wood, on patched plaster, over stains, or where an old oil-based coating is underneath, skipping it means the colour sits on the surface rather than bonding to it. It is also the step most often dropped by a quote that undercuts everyone else.
Preparation beats product every time
If we had to choose between premium paint on an unprepared wall and standard paint on a properly washed, filled, sanded and primed one, we would choose the second without hesitating. Ideally you get both, which is what we quote for.
What we will tell you
Ask us what we plan to use on your job and we will name the product and explain why it suits your surfaces. If you want to supply your own paint, that is fine — and we will say honestly if what you have bought is wrong for the room.
Common questions
- Does expensive paint actually last longer?
- Better paint holds colour and resists washing far better, but preparation matters more. Premium paint over poor preparation still fails.
- What paint do you use?
- It depends on the surface and the room. We choose for the job and tell you what and why.
- Can I supply my own paint?
- Yes. We will tell you honestly if it is wrong for the surface.
